I have had this Nook Simple Touch sitting around since 2014. I recently moved my smart home config to HAOS, and decided to turn it into a whole-home dashboard.

Which Nook model is that? I have an old BNRV300 laying around, wondering if it would be worth it start tinkering....

This is the BNRV300 as well. It would also work this way with a BNRV350 (glowlight)

You'll need to root and install custom firmware on the device so you can sideload apps. I would suggest starting at XDA-Developers. I also found this page useful though some links are dead.

Anyone ever done something like this with an e-ink kindle?

Very nice. 3-4 days is kind of a bummer. I thought e readers would usually go weeks or months at a time

They can when they don't have VNC running on them :)

Very true, however it's running VNC in the background all the time. If the screen isn't locked it will drain in a day or so (due to constant screen refreshes) but this is the only solution I can get working on this old machine at this stage.

It mostly resides on my coffee table where I have a charger hooked in to quickly plug it in and charge it. When I move I am thinking of 3D printing a wall mount or similar.

Normally they only draw current when updating the screen and then basically go into a deep sleep mode. With OPs implementation it's basically always on.

Sorry. But that plant looks like it has a giant dong.

Seriously though, that's super cool. Didn't know you could do that with a nook.
